Victory in cycling is down to the cyclist, the team tactics and may be luck on occasions.
Unlike motorsports, cycling has no manufacturer's title. The UCI recognizes the riders and the teams in its monthly ratings that are published on its website. But there is no recognition of the bike that got the rider over the line.
Does it matter if the team uses Pinarello Dogma2 or a Specialized Mclaren Venge? I would have through from a marketing perspective that a bike manufacturer would be looking for any edge it could get to sell more bikes.
Which bike manufacturer has recorded the most titles over the course of the year has intrigued me for a long time. So, using the data from http://inrng.com/2012/03/2012-pro-team-wins/#more-7620, I thought I would track which manufacturer has won the most races in 2012 (as at 19 March 2012).
| Manufacturer | Wins |
| Specialized | 21 |
| Pinarello | 18 |
| Cannondale | 12 |
| Ridley | 7 |
| Lapierre | 6 |
| Cervelo | 6 |
| Scott | 5 |
| Bianchi | 5 |
| Canyon | 4 |
| Giant | 3 |
| Trek | 2 |
| Kuota | 0 |
| BMC | 0 |
| Orbea | 0 |
| Wilier | 0 |
It is not surprising that Specialized and Pinarello lead the manufacturer's title. Boonan and Chicchi just cannot stop winning races. Cav has help Pinarello secure some quick wins. What is surprising is BMC and Wilier are languishing down the bottom with zero wins. I am sure that will change as the Spring Classics take hold and we approach the grand tours.
I am not reading anything in data. It is just an interesting snapshot in time. But is does make me wonder why Pinarello does not use the number of wins in a season in its marketing brochure to selling more bikes.
May be us weekend warriors do not care whether a rider wins on a Pinarello, Colnago or Trek. We have our favourite bike and will more heaven and earth to buy it.
I did.
I always get a special little buzz when a rider from Movistar win on their Dogma2.
