Criterium form of Canberra riders continue at the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic

After Canberra cyclists dominated the NSW Grand Prix series at the end of 2012, their winning form continued when ACT-based cyclist, Kimberly Wells, took out the opening round of the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic that kicked off in Geelong yesterday.

Wells showed some quick heels out of the last turn to beat defending champion Melissa Hoskins (Orica-AIS) over the line. Wells' victory was even more convincing given she was up against the dominant five person Orica-AIS team as well as Elvin and Cromwell that were entered as individual riders.

Post race, Wells said "The GreenEDGE girls are always up the front and us Specialized girls were trying to infiltrate that. I was keen to try and break them up. We all saw their lead out train at the end of today's race and I wanted to jump in on it."

Unfortunately, Wells was no strong enough to hang onto the yellow jersey during round 2 of the Classic at  Portarlington.

Gracie Elvin finished a very strong fourth on the Portarlington circuit in only her second race in the Orica-AIS colours.

It will be interesting what day 3 will bring for our ACT riders.
