Impressive start to the Road National Cycling Championships for Canberra Cyclists

Canberra cyclists enjoyed a successful first day at the Mars National Road Cycling Championships at Ballarat, taking out a gold and bronze, in cooler conditions than over the previous few days.

Ailee McDonald (Suzuki-Bontrager) took out the gold medal in the women's under 23 TT after finishing 17th in the women's TT race and being the best under 23 finisher.  She finished ahead of Australian representative Jess Allen.  The best Canberra finisher was Gracie Elvin (Orica-AIS) who finished in 8th place and 2.01 minutes down on winner Shara Gillow.  Jess Maclean failed to start the race.

Ailie's gold medal was not the only success for the day.  Michael Matthews riding in his Orica-GreenEdge kit for the first time took out the bronze medal in the men's elite TT.  His impressive ride was not enough to prevent Luke Durbridge (WA) winning the gold medal for the second year running. Three other ACT cyclists finished in the top 20, including Michael Cupitt (11th), Marc Williams (12th) and Joe Lewis (14th).  Nathan Haas did not start. The impressive start at the TT course surely improves Bling Matthews' chances on Sunday at the road race.

Photos to come.

ACT cyclists had no luck at the under 23 men's TT with Mitch Lovelock-Fay coming in sixth, 1.23 minutes down on winner Damien Howson.  Adam Phelan still managed to finish just outside the top 10 even after a heavy crash. There are no details available on whether Adam Phelan will recover in time for the u23 road race on Saturday morning.
